All About Coonhounds

Chris Rock and handsome Clooney !

In an ongoing effort to “rail against the powers that be” and get coonhounds placed higher on the AKC breed popularity list  – where they SHOULD BE!! here is some info about Black and tans — – I  rescued a black and tan many years ago – his name was Baker and I found out about him through Jayne Schlegel with American Black and Tan – he was an awesome dog – generous, kind, loyal, steadfast and super catcher of possums in my barn !! GO Baker !! I dearly loved him.

From the AKC Breed popularity page

Temperament:
Easy-Going, Bright, Brave
AKC Breed Popularity: Ranks 128 of 194  (what????)
Height: 25-27 inches (male), 23-25 inches (female)
Weight: 65-110 pounds
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
Group: Hound Group

About the Black and Tan Coonhound
Black and Tans have an amazingly sensitive nose, long, velvety ears, and a sweet disposition. The coal-black coat features rich tan accents, including the distinctive “pumpkin seeds” above keenly expressive eyes. These are big, strong hounds: A good-size male can stand 27 inches at the shoulder and cover ground with effortless, eager strides.
B&Ts are sociable hounds. A lonely B&T will serenade the neighborhood with loud, mournful “music.” B&Ts can keep pace with the most active family, but they also can hog the sofa for hours on end. Hounds will be hounds: A passing squirrel can arouse B&T prey drive in no time flat, so a strong leash and sturdy fence are must-haves. B&Ts might be too much hound for the lifestyle of every owner.

     Beautiful B and T Kaiser

My caveat  — But they are amazing and well worth the effort.  My mission is to educate, but also be realistic — Coonhounds are NOT for everyone. (just like any other breed of dog)  Please be diligent, do your homework, be realistic about what you want in a dog, and what you can handle.  Do you have small children? ARE you willing to educate them on how to “be around” a dog safely?? Do you travel? Is your family very active? Are you gone from home a lot due to work or any other reason??

Keep all this in mind – do your homework – be realistic about your expectations and be ready to FALL IN LOVE

                                                                                                     Well Dressed Hound !!!!

Coonie Comrades/Petunia

When I noticed this coonhound on Instagram, I immediately wanted to find out more. I wanted to hear the story. Her rescuer’s girlfriend shared the details with me, and I thought a story so heartwarming should be shared on the blog.
Sweet Petunia                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Petunia is a one year old blue tick coonhound, rescued from a kill shelter in South Carolina. Petunia and all of her ten siblings were shot and she was the only survivor. She has scoliosis so it is believed that all of her siblings had some sort of issue as well. The bullet that shot Petunia is still lodged in her spine and doctors felt that surgery could cause further damage. She was rescued by St Hubert’s in New Jersey.
                                                                                                                     Beautiful girl !
Enter her rescuer, who started randomly looking for a puppy in March of this year, after his sons witnessed their own puppy get run over and killed by a reckless driver.  The puppy they lost was similar in looks to Petunia, so he decided it was meant to be. The fact that Petunia came with some “complications” did not deter him, even though he had never dealt with a handicapped pet before, he decided everyone and every dog  deserves a chance. Petunia has been living with her family since April of this year with her three human brothers, one dog brother and two cat sisters, plus her awesome Dad and proud Aunt.

I look awesome in red !!!

Petunia loves to zoom around in her wheelchair and play tug of war with all of her two and four legged family (uhhh minus the cats) She reports that her owner is amazing with her. “He has a gentle but firm way with her. He doesn’t treat her like she “can’t”, reports her proud Aunt.  “He wants her to explore and try new things.” She is now able to “stand” on her back legs and walk a few feet. Petunia is showered with love and affection from everyone and loves everyone back in return. The family handles the paralysis together.  Petunia has to wear diapers and everyone in the family is now expert at changing them. Petunia is pretty much treated like a normal pup. She has a daily routine, which includes play time, wheel time and rest time.

                                                            OK What’s next ??

Petunia is truly a gem.  And like most dogs her love knows no bounds and she does not see herself as “handicapped”.  This family has embraced her and accepted her with truly inspiring  love, kindness and courage.  Obviously Petunia has found her perfect family. I am truly honored to share her story !!

Clooney the Coonie

Today’s super star is Clooney, Chris Rock’s absolutely gorgeous Black and Tan coonhound.  Chris adopted Clooney about five years ago and after looking at some of their accomplishments, they have not been still very much !!  I am in awe of all the healing and joy they have spread throughout their community. It is very inspiring !

**Note photograph texts are taken from Chris’s comments on #lifewithmyrescuedcoonhound

                                       SUPER CLOONEY !!

Chris shared with me that Clooney started off as a hunting dog, she is assured of that due to the tattoo in his ear.  He was found in the woods thirty pounds underweight and ended up at the Humane Society. Chris immediately recognized what a special dog he is and as they say, “The rest is history.”

Clooney helping spread the word !!! Meet A Helping Hero day at Petco. Clooney and his buddy Chance talking to people about therapy dogs.

Clooney On the Job!!

Clooney and I visited a camp for  kids who lost a parent or other close relative. It is put on by one of the local hospices. The kids just love giving Clooney big hugs. One of the kids told Clooney about his mama who had her sunset on January 24th.

                             Houndie hugs rock !

I have to post one more from our visit with kids with neurological disorders last night. This just melts my heart. Dogs are so amazing!

Clooney on a very important mission !                                                                                                                                                                      We went to Hero Day at Camp Weaver – for kids with wounded or fallen military parents. Clooney is taking a rest as we wait for the next set of kids to arrive.

Healing Hounds

Ready to Work

This post is about Jan Ferguson-Kramer’s fabulous redbone hound Dixie –  yet another story of the heart, courage and endless magic of a coonhound!

From Jan:

Dixie was rescued when she was seven months old. She had five different parasites, was 20 pounds underweight, had infected ears and a hernia. No contact with human beings for seven months locked up in a crate.  We took her to dog obedience class and they suggested that we try her as a therapy dog. That training was the best for her all around as she learned to let people touch her and love on her. Her trips to the nursing homes were always special. The patients there loved having the dogs there to play with. One trip to the VA hospital in particular, she went up to a man who was bedridden, and unable to move.  Dixie jumped up on the bed, laid down next to him and he cried.  She learned to give love as well as receive it from being a therapy dog.  Dixie was benefiting as well as the people she was visiting.  She LOVES them and they LOVE her right back!!

                                     Noble Nurse Dixie

Jan, thank you for sharing your story and it is my honor to welcome you and Dixie to the “family”!

            Super cool FB page                                      www.hoperisesnews.com

While doing some research on rescue hounds that have in some way “saved “their humans, I came across this amazing story that is the epitomy of “who saved who”? that we hear so often. I have been given permission to share this story from “Hope Rises”, about a Southern hound named Victoria and her very thankful rescuer.  Hope Rises is an oasis of hope in a world that is sometimes very scary.  I recommend you check it out !!

Hope Rises  (I love this) Cheektowaga, New York · Media/News Company
Igniting hope through stories of love and goodwill across the globe. This channel is meant to empower those through the beautiful actions and words of everyday people committing extraordinary acts. We are here to capture that and inspire the world.

HERO HOUND.
This rescue dog sniffed out cancer on her owner’s nose. Let’s all stop and hug our own dogs today for being incredibly, loyal angels. Read more from Lauren Amy.
“Victoria came from a rural shelter in South Carolina and brings us laughter and adventure. But recently, she brought me much more.
Last spring, I noticed a small bump on my nose and assumed it was a pimple or scratch. It went away. And then seemed to come back. And what was particularly odd was that Victoria would fixate on it, and sniff the spot like crazy. She was so persistent that I made an appointment with a doctor to have it looked at. I also captured a photo of her inspection.
What Victoria had detected was confirmed by a biopsy.
I had basal cell carcinoma on my nose. The lesion grew under my skin, requiring cosmetic surgical repair of the hole it left behind.
I have no doubt that without Victoria’s help, that lesion would have remained in my face longer and caused further disfigurement and even risked metastasis.”

The story we posted about the HERO HOUND is now featured on MSN News! #HopeRises …

Addition from MSN News Story

Thanks to her heroic hound Victoria, who she adopted eight months ago from her organization Magic’s Mission Beagle and Hound Rescue, she had her symptoms checked out early. Lauren said: “When she came to us in the shelter she arrived with a very badly damaged eye. After fostering her we fell in love and decided to adopt her. “While we don’t know what caused the injuries to her eye, many hounds sustain wounds while hunting because they are brave and hardly think of what they are running through when chasing something.” According to Lauren, Victoria has more than returned the favor of being rescued.

Healing Hounds !!

I recently came across a “survey” of popularity for dog breeds in the USA compiled by the AKC and of course I had to dive in and “check the coonhounds”. To my surprise Treeing Walker Coonhounds, described as being brave, smart, and courteous, having the ability to quicken our pulse with their “powerful and propulsive hind quarters working to cover maximum ground with minimal effort”, possessing a beautiful tri color coat, and the ability to melt your heart “basking in the warmth of a campfire after an honest night’s work”. And I quote “this sweet-faced hound will look up and stir your soul with his gentle, pleading expression. ( Note illustration of the gentle pleading expression below). Mercy, what a pretty picture! No wonder Treeing Walkers are called the People’s Choice”. Whoo hoooooooo !! YAY !! Awesome! totally agree !!! Ranking ???? 137 out of 194 ??? Immediately my feathers are extremely ruffled. I called for Riley B my faithful and trusty TWC mix so that I could quickly do some healing stretches to calm myself down !!!!

Illustration gentle pleading expression
Stretch ! Breath!

Mom is this downward dog?

Healing stretches  – calming stretches  –

More to follow – additional “coonhound breeds” to check– I must do more research !!

Talk to the Hound

Super Star !

This is one super coonhound !! Thank you so much Cheri Ann for allowing me to “ahroooo” the praises of this talented boy !!

Talk about a rags to riches story!!

Rusty, a bluetick coonhound mix, was a rescue from Kentucky. He was found almost dead on the side of the road from loss of blood, with several broken bones. He had an orange hunting collar with tags, but when the number was contacted, they claimed it was a wrong number. He was obviously a “throw away.” His story was shared on Facebook, a local news station picked up his story and money was raised to cover his expensive vet bills.  Cheri Ann and her husband drove ten hours to adopt him.

After some healing time, Cheri started taking Rusty for training at BFF Pet Services,  and after passing basic obedience  she tried Rusty in a tracking class. When he didn’t seem interested in that, and his sweet temperament became more apparent, she decided to train him for dog therapy to make visits at the local Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, since her husband is also a veteran.

Rusty excelled at it!

Congrats !!

After completing the Canine Good Citizen prep class AND passing the test and becoming CGC titled, Cheri and Rusty completed Dog Therapy 101 class. From there Rusty was registered with the AKC under PAL (Purebred Alternativ Breeding), then  Rusty was tested and accepted at Pets On Wheels.

Focused therapy dog !!

Rusty became BFF Pet Services FIRST hound dog to become a certified therapy dog. He completed his first ten visits required by the AKC, and earned his Novice Therapy Dog title (THDN)

And some say  hound dogs are stubborn and hard to train????

Rusty also loves doing children’s events and of course they adore him !!

Instant love !!

I’m here for the party!

Cheri Ann and Rusty continued with a Trick Dog class. Rusty did fantastic! He earned his Novice Trick Dog title (NTD), and became only the SECOND bluetick coonhound in the country to get his NTD title. After doing so well with that, Cheri Ann continued to work with Rusty’s trainer, and the super houndie tested and titled for Intermediate Trick Dog (ITD). Then he tested and also passed for Advanced Trick Dog (ATD). He is the ONLY bluetick coonhound in the country to have all these titles.

He does trick shows (shown below as Batman pushing Robin in the broken down Batmobile), and he is also signed with a Talent Agency for commercials and TV. Hound dogs are so smart!!!

Coonhound walk of fame !

Nothing short of amazing — but hey –  Rusty is a mighty coonhound !! Need I say more??

Thank you Joel Williams for allowing me to share your beautiful story !!

Look at those tears. TWO hours from euthanasia.

This sweet girl, with tears in her eyes, was two hours away from her final walk when a friend, Candace Engel, pulled her.   (Gives me chills)

Thank you for saving me says Candy ! But who saved who ??
Gorgeous girl !

Joel’s “spoiled rotten hound”, Princess Candy.

Joel says,  “The rest is history”,  as you can see. Would not trade her for anything in the world. She will never worry again.

Joel shared that he was not in the best of places himself when he found Candy —  but someone had a feeling and someone took a chance and a beautiful friendship happened.  Look at them now !!!!   Nothing short of MAGICAL !!!!  Welcome to the “family” Joel and Candy.

Talk to the Hound

I am excited to do my first post generated from all the amazing stories sent to me from  #lifewithmyrescuedcoonhound.  I am so thankful for the many coonhound lovers that reached out and gave me permission to  share stories about the amazing accomplishments and healing nature of our beloved coonhounds !!!

This story is shared from Lori Donahue and her dog Ellie. And if you do not immediately fall in love with this sweet houndie,  you might better check for a pulse !!

Lori’s story…

“I can’t believe that it’s been almost a year since we rescued Ellie. She is such a loving, sweet dog and we love her so much! I’m so blessed that we “picked”each other!!! Especially when we were hiking just her and I when I broke my fibula, tore the deltoid ligament. I accidentally let go of the leash and she continued down the hill without me, I thought I was gonna never see her again, but she stopped looked up at me on top of the hill, and this sweet girl came back to me. We waited together till my husband found us! We will always be there for each other…”

I LOVE THIS STORY !!!!!!

SOOOO true !!
The noble hound profile!

The loyal and sweet Ellie!!!!

Thank you again Lori and Ellie !!
