Talk to the Hound

Super Star !

This is one super coonhound !! Thank you so much Cheri Ann for allowing me to “ahroooo” the praises of this talented boy !!

Talk about a rags to riches story!!

Rusty, a bluetick coonhound mix, was a rescue from Kentucky. He was found almost dead on the side of the road from loss of blood, with several broken bones. He had an orange hunting collar with tags, but when the number was contacted, they claimed it was a wrong number. He was obviously a “throw away.” His story was shared on Facebook, a local news station picked up his story and money was raised to cover his expensive vet bills.  Cheri Ann and her husband drove ten hours to adopt him.

After some healing time, Cheri started taking Rusty for training at BFF Pet Services,  and after passing basic obedience  she tried Rusty in a tracking class. When he didn’t seem interested in that, and his sweet temperament became more apparent, she decided to train him for dog therapy to make visits at the local Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, since her husband is also a veteran.

Rusty excelled at it!

Congrats !!

After completing the Canine Good Citizen prep class AND passing the test and becoming CGC titled, Cheri and Rusty completed Dog Therapy 101 class. From there Rusty was registered with the AKC under PAL (Purebred Alternativ Breeding), then  Rusty was tested and accepted at Pets On Wheels.

Focused therapy dog !!

Rusty became BFF Pet Services FIRST hound dog to become a certified therapy dog. He completed his first ten visits required by the AKC, and earned his Novice Therapy Dog title (THDN)

And some say  hound dogs are stubborn and hard to train????

Rusty also loves doing children’s events and of course they adore him !!

Instant love !!

I’m here for the party!

Cheri Ann and Rusty continued with a Trick Dog class. Rusty did fantastic! He earned his Novice Trick Dog title (NTD), and became only the SECOND bluetick coonhound in the country to get his NTD title. After doing so well with that, Cheri Ann continued to work with Rusty’s trainer, and the super houndie tested and titled for Intermediate Trick Dog (ITD). Then he tested and also passed for Advanced Trick Dog (ATD). He is the ONLY bluetick coonhound in the country to have all these titles.

He does trick shows (shown below as Batman pushing Robin in the broken down Batmobile), and he is also signed with a Talent Agency for commercials and TV. Hound dogs are so smart!!!

Coonhound walk of fame !

Nothing short of amazing — but hey –  Rusty is a mighty coonhound !! Need I say more??

Thank you Joel Williams for allowing me to share your beautiful story !!

Look at those tears. TWO hours from euthanasia.

This sweet girl, with tears in her eyes, was two hours away from her final walk when a friend, Candace Engel, pulled her.   (Gives me chills)

Thank you for saving me says Candy ! But who saved who ??
Gorgeous girl !

Joel’s “spoiled rotten hound”, Princess Candy.

Joel says,  “The rest is history”,  as you can see. Would not trade her for anything in the world. She will never worry again.

Joel shared that he was not in the best of places himself when he found Candy —  but someone had a feeling and someone took a chance and a beautiful friendship happened.  Look at them now !!!!   Nothing short of MAGICAL !!!!  Welcome to the “family” Joel and Candy.

Good times !!

Whew  – long hot day =- one of my former students called and alerted me to a “Fido Fest” happening on the other side of town. Riley B and I packed it up and headed on over there. Got to say I was a little apprehensive not knowing how many dogs would be there and what the lay out would be . Riley B was WAAAYY excited when he spied the other dogs.  Immediate thought ?? What have I done ??? HOWEVER,  I have to say I was very pleased with him.  Yes he got excited and yes he wanted to greet ALL the other dogs  and YES he was distracted at times,  but for the most part he listened to me and did not get crazy obnoxious. I am placing this trip in the success column !  Woot Woot !!

Look both ways !

Waiting to cross !

Come on in ! NO one has “peed in the pool”
FOCUSED!!!
Where is the dog treat store ?

Hey !!!!! Who are you ?

A reminder to me that if I never try different challenges with him I will never know how he will react.

Water dogs!!                                                                                                             #Hounddoghappy!

Talk to the Hound

I am excited to do my first post generated from all the amazing stories sent to me from  #lifewithmyrescuedcoonhound.  I am so thankful for the many coonhound lovers that reached out and gave me permission to  share stories about the amazing accomplishments and healing nature of our beloved coonhounds !!!

This story is shared from Lori Donahue and her dog Ellie. And if you do not immediately fall in love with this sweet houndie,  you might better check for a pulse !!

Lori’s story…

“I can’t believe that it’s been almost a year since we rescued Ellie. She is such a loving, sweet dog and we love her so much! I’m so blessed that we “picked”each other!!! Especially when we were hiking just her and I when I broke my fibula, tore the deltoid ligament. I accidentally let go of the leash and she continued down the hill without me, I thought I was gonna never see her again, but she stopped looked up at me on top of the hill, and this sweet girl came back to me. We waited together till my husband found us! We will always be there for each other…”

I LOVE THIS STORY !!!!!!

SOOOO true !!
The noble hound profile!

The loyal and sweet Ellie!!!!

Thank you again Lori and Ellie !!

Finding a lost dog !! Awesome Information !!!

This is a huge post but contains such important and helpful information!!!

I recently saw a post on the #lifewithmyrescued coonhound page that just screamed  “SHARE ON THE BLOG ” !!!  This is invaluable information  from the Montgomery County Lost Pets page in Maryland and shared by Meghan Connolly.   EVERYONE needs this information for finding a lost dog, but coonies are notorious for following that nose into “a galaxy far far away”.  So here goes !

  1. Put something with your scent outside, like unwashed shirts and socks. If possible hang socks on a tree branch or somewhere the wind can carry your scent. Leave water and a can of fishy cat food or tuna or smelly dog food /treats.
  2. File a lost report with animal control and microchip company if chipped
  3. Post to Pawboost.com  www.pawboost.com  (you do not have to pay for this, they will post to Facebook and send alerts for free),  NextDoor.com, helping lost pets.com/PET, Petharbor.com, Craigslist lost and found and pet sections, other lost and found pet groups/Facebook, neighborhood/community groups, yard sale sites for your area, etc.  As time allows check these places for “found” posts as well as Pet for Sale ads or recruit someone to check for you. Consider using Find Toto robocalls at findtoto.com. Other sites include lostmydoggie.com, or your local chapter of the ASPCA.
  4. Put up fliers in at least a 2-3 mile radius. Make sure the type is large enough to read from the road. Place plastic page protectors with the opening at the bottom sealed with clear tape to protect from rain. Secure with tacks/staples and clear packing tape if using color fliers or florescent tape if black and white. Remember not everyone uses Facebook!! Make sure to give the flier  to your mail carrier.
  5. Mount a large, clear full body photo on bright poster board and handwrite LOST ! REWARD! and your phone number in large print that is visible from a car. Place at intersections. You can cover with cellophane to protect from rain. Home Depot and Lowes sell blank signs with stands and you can mount bright poster board to these, or use old election signs. Make a two sided sign by taping two large posters back to back at the top and sides, slip over the sign, then secure with tape at the bottom. If possible put a 2 sided sign in your front yard.
  6. Consider using a pet tracker, such as Dogs Finding Dogs, Finding Dogs, or Pure Gold.  Bag up items with your dog’s scent (blanket, bed, brush, toys) to preserve scent for the tracking dog.
  7. Check shelters in person every other day if possible. This is imperative. Do not dismiss dogs posted based on the photo alone ( or collar etc). Shelters DO make mistakes on intake and photos can be VERY deceiving. Shelter staff is many times over stretched and underfunded so mistakes happen. (not finding fault – just stating a fact)  Finders sometimes change collars or put a collar on a found dog not already wearing one.
  8. If practical walk your neighborhoodd, speak to your neighbors and hand out fliers.

Note position of hounds in relation to human. Commonly referred to as scent deafness or “on a mission”.

The company that has the microchip for my precious Riley B is 24PetWatch. They were super helpful and friendly each time I talked with them while going through the registration process.  www.24petwatch.com

Loungin’ Hound

Exhausted !!

A very long day in the trenches- Not happy that I had “adult responsibility” items to check off my list today — so no long walk  🙁  Riley is chill but I still hate to miss it.  Ever the resourceful fellow, (and most coonhounds are VERY resourceful)  he substituted with a rousing game of “bark at the horses” next door, run up and down the fence with the neighbor’s dog and zoom around the house with wild abandon. Now he is out.

Goodnight!!
Do not disturb!

I am beyond excited to send out the first post for this category . Thank you thank you Jane Maxwell for allowing me to share the good news about your wonderful Mazi!!  Looks like this is only the beginning for some pretty amazing and awe inspiring accomplishments !   Ever hear someone say – oh a coonhound would be terrible at that == they are hunting dogs == they are stubborn = they are never obedient = they are blah blah blah – well this category is going to blow all those nay sayers out of the water in grand style !!

AAAAAAHHHHROOOOOOOOOO !!! Go hounds !! See the post below from #lifewithmyrescuedcoonhound
